Why Believe in Reiki: Understanding Its Benefits and How It Can Support Your Healing Journey

People often ask me why I became a Reiki practitioner.

The answer is simple.

I have watched people carry burdens they were never meant to carry alone. I've seen stress become a constant companion, grief settle deep within the heart, and anxiety convince people that something is wrong with them.

Many people come to me believing they are broken.

I don't believe they are.

I believe life happens to all of us. Over time, our experiences—whether joyful or painful—shape how we see ourselves and the world around us. Stress, loss, fear, disappointment, trauma, and even the pressures of everyday life can leave us feeling disconnected from who we truly are.

That is why I created Pathways to a Divine Self.

My mission is to help people understand why they are feeling the way they do and to gently guide them toward releasing the emotional and energetic blockages that may be keeping them from living as their authentic selves.

Reiki is one of the beautiful tools I use to support that journey.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle Japanese energy healing practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s. The word Reiki combines two Japanese words:

  • Rei – Universal or spiritual wisdom

  • Ki – Life force energy

Together, Reiki is often described as universal life energy.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner gently places their hands on or just above different areas of the body. The intention is to encourage deep relaxation and support the body's natural ability to restore balance. Many people describe feeling warmth, tingling, deep relaxation, or simply a peaceful sense of calm.

Every person's experience is unique. Some notice an immediate sense of peace, while others discover subtle emotional shifts or a greater sense of clarity in the days that follow.

Reiki Is About More Than Relaxation

Many people think Reiki is simply about relaxing.

While relaxation is certainly one of its greatest gifts, I believe Reiki offers something much deeper.

It provides an opportunity to slow down.

To breathe.

To become aware of what your mind and body have been trying to tell you.

So often we keep moving through life without stopping to ask ourselves why we feel anxious, exhausted, disconnected, or overwhelmed. Reiki creates a quiet space where we can reconnect with ourselves without judgment.

Healing begins with awareness.

Everyday Life Through the Lens of Reiki

Imagine a single parent working two jobs.

They're worried about paying rent, keeping food on the table, and making sure their children have everything they need. They lie awake at night wondering how they'll make it through another month.

Their body never truly relaxes because it's constantly preparing for the next challenge.

Or imagine someone grieving the loss of a loved one.

Friends and family have returned to their daily routines, yet their world still feels different.

They smile for others while quietly carrying sadness they don't know how to release.

Or perhaps someone has spent years in relationships where they never felt heard or valued.

Eventually, they begin believing their thoughts don't matter.

These experiences don't mean someone is broken.

They mean they're human.

While Reiki doesn't erase life's challenges or replace professional medical or mental health care, many people find that it offers a peaceful environment where they can relax, reflect, and reconnect with themselves. Feeling calmer and more centered can make it easier to navigate life's challenges with greater clarity and resilience.

Benefits People Often Experience

Every Reiki session is different because every person is different.

Many people choose Reiki because they find it supports:

  • Deep relaxation

  • Reduced stress

  • Emotional balance

  • Greater self-awareness

  • Better sleep

  • Increased sense of inner peace

  • Feeling more grounded

  • Support during grief and life transitions

  • A stronger connection between mind, body, and spirit

For some, Reiki becomes a regular part of their wellness routine. For others, it's something they seek during particularly stressful seasons of life.

Reiki and the Chakra System

At Pathways to a Divine Self, Reiki is often paired with an exploration of the chakra system.

The chakras are commonly described as seven primary energy centers associated with different aspects of our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Think about your own life.

If you're constantly worried about paying your bills, keeping a roof over your head, or putting food on the table, it can feel almost impossible to focus on anything else. Many people associate these feelings of safety and stability with the Root Chakra.

If you've stopped enjoying the things that once brought you happiness, you may choose to reflect on your creativity and emotional well-being, qualities often associated with the Sacral Chakra.

If you constantly doubt yourself or struggle to believe you're good enough, it may be helpful to explore themes connected to the Solar Plexus Chakra.

Rather than viewing the chakras as something mystical or complicated, I encourage people to think of them as a framework for understanding themselves.

Sometimes what we need most isn't another solution.

Sometimes we simply need a better understanding of what we're feeling.

Reiki in Hospitals and Healthcare

Many people are surprised to learn that Reiki has found a place in some healthcare settings around the world.

Some hospitals, cancer centers, hospice programs, and integrative health clinics have chosen to offer Reiki as a complementary wellness service alongside conventional medical care. In these settings, Reiki may be used to help support relaxation and comfort before or after medical procedures or during recovery.

Hospice organizations may also offer Reiki to provide comfort and promote a peaceful environment for patients and their families.

These programs vary by hospital and healthcare system, and not every facility offers Reiki. When it is available, it is provided as a complementary therapy, meaning it is intended to work alongside—not replace—medical treatment.

What Happens During a Reiki Session?

If you've never experienced Reiki before, you may be wondering what to expect.

A typical session is peaceful and relaxing.

You'll remain fully clothed while lying comfortably on a massage table or sitting in a chair. Soft music may be played as the practitioner gently places their hands on or just above different areas of your body.

Sessions generally last between 45 and 60 minutes.

Some people feel warmth.

Some notice tingling sensations.

Others simply enjoy an hour of uninterrupted peace.

There is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki.

Your experience is uniquely your own.

Is Reiki Right for You?

You don't need to be familiar with energy healing to benefit from Reiki.

You don't need to understand the chakra system.

You don't even need to know exactly why you're feeling the way you do.

You simply need to be willing to pause.

To breathe.

To become curious about yourself.

Reiki may be a meaningful addition to your wellness journey if you're looking for ways to reduce stress, cultivate relaxation, reconnect with yourself, or complement your existing self-care practices.

One Final Thought

One of the most important lessons I've learned through this work is this:

You are not broken.

I know there may be moments when it feels that way.

Maybe life has left you carrying grief, trauma, disappointment, fear, or experiences that have made you question your worth. Maybe you've spent years wondering why you feel different, why you're struggling, or why life seems harder than it should.

But those experiences do not define who you are.

They may have left wounds that need care.

They may have created emotional and energetic blockages that deserve your attention.

They may have changed how you see yourself.

But they have never changed your worth.

Healing isn't about fixing someone who is broken.

Healing is about remembering who you were before life convinced you that you were.

Thank you for allowing me to share this part of my journey with you.

If you're ready to learn more about Reiki, the chakra system, or holistic wellness, I invite you to continue exploring Pathways to a Divine Self. My hope is that every resource you find here helps you better understand yourself and take one gentle step closer to living as your authentic self.

With love,

Crystal Numan
